چکیده

Rebel agents are intelligent agents that can oppose goals or plans assigned to them, or the general attitudes and/or behavior of other agents. They can serve purposes such as ethics, safety, and task execution correctness; enhance social co-creativity, and provide or support diverse points of view. We previously proposed a framework for AI rebellion and explored various scenarios that have positive AI rebels as protagonists. In recognition of the fact that, in human psychology, noncompliance has profound socio-cognitive implications, we now explore several mechanisms that could further support rebellion in cognitively-complex AI agents. We focus specifically on social awareness and counternarrative intelligence: a new term we propose that refers to an agent’s ability to produce and use alternative narratives that support, express, and/or justify rebellion, either sincerely or deceptively.

Case-based Local and Global Percept Processing for Rebel Agents

Rebel Agents are goal-reasoning agents capable of “refusing” a usergiven goal, plan, or subplan that conflicts with the agent’s own internal motivation. Rebel Agents are intended to enhance character believability, a key aspect of creating engaging narratives in any medium, among other possible uses. We propose to implement and expand upon a Rebel Agent prototype in eBotworks, a cognitive agent...

Believable Emotion-Influenced Perception: The Path to Motivated Rebel Agents

The new Rebel Agent paradigm is meant to help achieve character believability in various forms of interactive storytelling. Rebel agents may refuse a goal or plan that they assess to be in a conflict with their own dynamic motivation model: we call such conflict situations “motivation discrepancies”. We are currently in the process of implementing a Rebel Agent prototype in eBotworks, a cogniti...

The AI Rebellion: Changing the Narrative

Sci-fi narratives permeating the collective consciousness endow AI Rebellion with ample negative connotations. However, for AI agents, as for humans, attitudes of protest, objection, and rejection have many potential benefits in support of ethics, safety, self-actualization, solidarity, and social justice, and are necessary in a wide variety of contexts. We launch a conversation on constructive...

Motivation Discrepancies for Rebel Agents: Towards a Framework for Case-based Goal-Driven Autonomy for Character Believability

Character believability is one of the key requirements of a successful narrative. In order to be believable, characters must appear to act in accordance with personal motivation, which is shaped through events occurring throughout the narrative. Goal-Driven Autonomy (GDA), is a model of goal reasoning in which agents identify, reason about, and, if necessary, modify goals that they will pursue....

Social Attitudes of AI Rebellion: A Framework

Human attitudes of objection, protest, and rebellion have undeniable potential to bring about social benefits, from social justice to healthy balance in relationships. At times, they can even be argued to be ethically obligatory. Conversely, AI rebellion is largely seen as a dangerous, destructive prospect. With the increase of interest in collaborative human/AI environments in which synthetic ...
